Municipal Theatre

The building of the Municipal Theatre was inaugurated in 1868. The young, developing town of Mariánské Lázně could boast its own theatre, while in Prague the foundation stone of the National Theatre was just being laid.

The Municipal Theatre was built in 1865-1868 according to the plans of the Mariánské Lázně builder Friedrich Zickler. The Neo-Renaissance theatre building was very modern for its time. In 1889, electric lighting was introduced to the stage and auditorium. The inaugural performance took place on 8 August 1868. In 1905 the theatre was rebuilt according to the new safety regulations in Art Nouveau style. The theatre building was extended. The last renovation of the entire listed building took place in 2007-2008. The technical equipment was modernized, the interior was restored, and an entire new auditorium was installed. Wheelchair access and seats for disabled visitors were also built. The capacity of the auditorium is now 326 seats. The Municipal Theatre reopened to visitors on 12 May 2008.

There has never been a permanent professional stage with an acting troupe in Mariánské Lázně. The building has always been and continues to be used for touring performances of Czech and foreign theatres, for musical productions of all genres, concerts, entertainment shows and regular performances for children.

Theatre Gallery

It´s not just theatre or music performances that you go to the city theatre for. The exhibitions of fine and applied art held in the theatre gallery are also very popular. Every month a new exhibition is on display in the theatre. The exhibitions are accessible during theatre performances or during regular tours of the theatre (or by prior telephone appointment). Most exhibitions are for sale.
