Great Spas of Europe

The Great Spas of Europe was a multinational serial nomination for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The final nomination of the Great Spas of Europe consisted of a total of 11 spa towns from seven European countries:

• Bad Ems
• Bad Kissingen
• Baden-Baden
• Baden u Vídně
• Bath
• Františkovy Lázně
• Karlovy Vary
• Mariánské Lázně
• Montecatini Terme
• Spa
• Vichy

The famous baths of Europe will be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in the summer of 2021.

These are historic spa towns that were founded and developed around naturally occurring healing resources. The nominated towns represent a type of international spa towns from what is now considered the "Golden Age of Spa" (18^th century - 1920´s).

Great Spas of Europe:

• are an extraordinary testimony to the origin, development and peak of European spa culture and balneology at the turn of the 19^th and 20^th centuries.
• represent settlements with an exceptionally well-preserved historical urban structure and a purposefully landscaped urban environment connected to the surrounding therapeutic landscape.
• are characterized by a specific architecture with a great variety of buildings serving spa and social functions, set in parks, gardens and promenades.
• were meeting places for prominent personalities, members of royal and noble families, inspiration for eminent writers and artists, and generally contributed to the blurring of differences in the treatment of men and women.
