Are you looking for a unique place where fascinating nature, geological features and historical atmosphere come together? The Křížky National Nature Monument is a hidden gem of West Bohemia. This unique site lies between the villages of Prameny and Nová Ves near Bečov nad Teplou and offers an unforgettable experience for lovers of both nature and history.

Fragile Beauty of the Heathlands

Křížky is home to rare ecosystems created by the specific soil composition. The bedrock consists of serpentinite, a magnesium-rich rock that shapes the vegetation. Only hardy plants can survive in these conditions, which is why unique species grow here. Among the most important is Cerastium alsinifolium, an endemic species found only in this part of West Bohemia.

In spring, the landscape turns into a sea of blooming heather (Erica herbacea), its wine-red color giving the place a distinctive character. Other rare species include Alpine boxwood and the critically endangered Sudeten bedstraw (Galium sudeticum). To protect this unique site, the area has been fenced, but visitors can still pass through a gate to reach the crosses.

Life Among the Rocks

Besides plants, rare animals also inhabit Křížky. The open rocky areas provide shelter for many insect species, including protected butterflies. Reptiles also thrive here. To preserve biodiversity, part of the area is regularly grazed by sheep and goats, which helps the heathlands regenerate naturally.

History and Mystery of the Three Crosses

The landmark of this site is the three crosses, erected in 1849 on the rocky hilltop. According to historical records, devout residents of Sangerberg (today’s Prameny) built them as a symbol of gratitude. The craftsmanship of local stonemasons is still visible, even though the inscriptions are only partially legible. Preserved fragments refer to religious themes and thanksgiving for miraculous healings.

Next to the crosses lies a polished serpentinite slab with directions to prominent peaks such as Vladař and Klínovec. Thus, Křížky offers not only spiritual meaning but also serves as a unique viewpoint.

How to Get to Křížky

The easiest access is from Prameny towards Nová Ves. The crosses are visible from afar, and the route is suitable even for less experienced hikers. A visit is especially recommended in spring and summer, when the site is at its most beautiful.
