Roman Catholic Church - Marianske Lazne

The Roman Catholic Dean´s Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in the Neo-Byzantine style in 1844-1848. It was built in the middle of Goethe Square on the site of the brick chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary from 1820. The plans for the construction of the church were drawn up by the Munich architect Johann Gottfried Gutensohn. The actual construction of the church was carried out by the builder of the Teplá monastery, Anton Thurner, with the help of the Prague builder and sculptor Joseph Kranner (among others, a follower of the construction of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague). The church was consecrated in 1848 by Abbot Heinl.

We enter the church by 33 steps, which symbolize the 33 years of the life of Jesus Christ. Above the main entrance to the church we can notice the emblem commemorating the founder of the Teplá monastery - Hroznata. The Hroznata emblem depicts three antlers in a golden field. The letters M.J.H.A.T. reveal that the church was built by the abbot of the Teplá monastery Marian Josef Heinl.
