This elegant structure with 72 columns was designed by Anton Turner, a builder from Teplá. The uniqueness of the pavilion lies not only in its grandeur but also in its refined construction, which allowed it to be built on less stable ground without unnecessary strain.

At the time of its construction, the columned hall was a revelation. While only modest houses surrounded it, above the spring rose an elegant domed building, welcoming spa guests in all its splendor. Original Spring Outflows and Bottling of the Water

Before the pavilion was built, the Cross Spring was known only to the locals. It flowed from a tree stump, from which the monk Damián Schultz extracted healing salt, later sold under the name Sal Teplensis. The first professional documentation of the spring took place in 1789 by physician Johann Josef Nehr, who ensured its hygienic use by covering it.

As the fame of Mariánské Lázně grew, so did the distribution of Cross Spring water. In 1818, bottling of the water in ceramic jugs began, and it was exported to many European cities, including Saint Petersburg and London. This uniqueness contributed to the international reputation of Mariánské Lázně’s healing waters.

Caution During Renovations

Over the years, the pavilion has undergone several renovations, always with the utmost sensitivity to its historical significance. One of its most distinctive features is the double cross on the dome, added during renovations in 1854. It symbolizes the town’s ecclesiastical heritage, as Mariánské Lázně fell under the administration of the Premonstratensian Monastery in Teplá.

Locals and experts were aware of the fragility of the hydrogeological system, so any construction work was carried out with extreme caution. The fear that improper interventions could cause the disappearance of the Cross Spring was so great that renovations of the pavilion were postponed multiple times throughout the 19th century.
